About the Audi e-tron

Introduced in 2019, the e-tron marked the start of Audi's electric offensive, combining the brand's SUV design language with a new-generation battery architecture.

History and trivia

The Audi e-tron reached dealerships between 2018 and 2019 as the four-ring brand's first fully electric series-production model, part of the Volkswagen Group's broader electrification push. It was built on a platform adapted to house a floor-mounted battery pack and two electric motors, one per axle, giving it quattro all-wheel drive. With this launch Audi went head to head with electric SUVs like the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace, leaning on comfort and technology as its calling card rather than outright performance.

Among its more unusual features, the e-tron offered optional camera-based wing mirrors that projected the view onto small OLED screens mounted in the doors, an uncommon solution for a production car at the time. Its regenerative braking system could recover a large share of the energy used in everyday driving, easing wear on the mechanical brakes. The e-tron name was later folded into the Q8 e-tron lineup, with the original model helping lay the groundwork for Audi's current electric family.
